Book Camp!

"Book Camp: A hands-on introduction to publishing".

"Book Camp" provides a hands-on introduction to desktop publishing for
academic and support staff, students, social enterprises, and anyone else
who needs to develop their skills in producing professional-looking
publications on a budget. The initiative is supported by UCL Knowledge
Transfer Champions funding. In the spirit of Knowledge Exchange, this
workshop aims to establish a platform of communication between the
publishing business and universities. Book Camp is also supported by
collaboration between UCL Advances and Norvik Press, a small publishing
company specialising in Scandinavian languages and culture, based at the
Department of Scandinavian Studies, UCL.

During this two-day workshop we will discuss various aspects of the
publishing business. Thanks to the help of many experts in the field, we
will talk about the publishing cycle, the changing status of the book and
we will learn more about publishing at UCL. All participants will also be
able to gain hands-on experience in developing marketing techniques and in
creating books, journals and magazines.

The workshop is open to all staff and students at UCL as well as to
members of the wider public. Please note that admission is free but there
is only a limited number of places available. If you would like to attend
please fill in the attached form and email Dr Elettra Carbone at
norvikevents(a)gmail.com by Friday 28th October. You will receive a
confirmation e-mail by Monday 31st October.

If you would like to take part in the publishing workshop on 8th November
please remember to bring with you a text (and pictures) of your choice.
This could be an article or a review you have written, a fictional text
you are particularly fond of, etc. During the second part of the InDesign
workshop we will show you how to prepare this text for publication in a
journal.
